SUDO is a national NGO registered with the Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC) in April 2001. It is a rights-based organisation working towards achieving "justice for all". The organisation has a two-folds programming approach, comprising both practical interventions as its ‘hardware' component and the Human Rights dimension as an integral ‘software' component, under which all its projects are designed and implemented. While the practical interventions are tackling the consequences of a specific problem (whether development, recovery, or relief), the rights-based approach is more focussed towards addressing the root causes, together with the intervening and proximate factors. The activities related to human rights include, among others, aspects of protection, peace-building, psychosocial, awareness raising, empowerment, organising people and advocacy.

All these interventions, integrated together, are designated to improve the well-being of the needy and vulnerable groups, be they are rural/urban poor, children, disabled, aged, displaced, returnees, etc. Of course, SUDO is aware of the multiplier effect that these groups might be suffering, as well as aware of the gender dimension of its interventions.

Both practical and soft interventions are envisaged to contribute to social peace-building, conflict transformation, dissemination of human rights, and ultimately facilitate community-based social contracts. Such an approach is anticipated to empower communities, raise their awareness, strengthen their structures and help them to emerge into a citizenship-based civil society that is capable of claiming its rights, assuming its responsibility and resolving its interest without recourse to violence.
